Are you a procrastinator?
The science of physics recognizes two laws of inertia, both of which can be related to procrastination. No. 1, “Standing objects tend to remain stationary” and No. 2, “Moving objects tend to stay in motion.”
Which one represents you best? And how can you go from “standing” to “moving”?
Try these strategies to stop procrastinating:
1. Take five minutes to list out the things “you were going to do tomorrow.”
On a blank sheet of paper, hell, on a scrap sheet a paper, a tee shirt, even your mirror in the bathroom, note several important activities and short term goals you are delaying or have put on hold that you need to get done for yourself and your creative business.
2. Look at your list—and do one thing on it right now. Just Do It! #Nike
Put the energy you’ve been directing toward excuses, being on social media for hours, or vegging out aka couch potato, into the activity you’ve been avoiding. Action eliminates anxiety.
3. Pick a time (today) to work on the list. No, I’m Serious!!!
If getting started is the hard part for you, set aside a designated time slot, at least 60 minutes, for work specifically on one job, project or personal goal that you’ve been “leaving until later.” In words of my good friend, Eric Thomas, The Hip Hop Preacher… “You Got To Want It As Bad As You Want To Breathe, And Not Just Kinda Want It!!!”
4. Quit trying to be perfect.
What counts is quality of effort, not perfect results. Don’t let yourself get bogged down with a preoccupation for perfectionism as we creatives are none to do. We are always trying to perfect our work, and be the best artist as possible. We should shift our mindset and become the best business owner, the best entrepreneur, and then the best artist as possible. You will never get away from being a starving artist, if you are always trying to be the perfect artist.
5. If what you’re putting off involves other people, talk to them.
Your reasons for delaying action might be imaginary or just in your head. Lack of communication often turns molehills into mountains. If you are chatty patty on social media, texts, or whatever in your leisure time…take the time to hit the people for some creative collaboration. Slide into their DM’s, and get the ball rolling to your creative entrepreneurial dreams.
6. Ask yourself, What’s the worst thing that could happen if I did this today?
Do you fear the consequences associated with the action you’ve been avoiding? The worst-case scenario most likely would be a minor inconvenience or a temporary setback. I personally love the phrase, “There Is Nothing To Fear But Fear Itself!”. I quickly learned in my creative business journey, that on the opposite side of fear is success. Also, if you fail, learn to fail fast, and get up even faster. Failing Fast is the best way to be on the path to success.
7. Imagine how you’ll feel once you do whatever it is you’ve been postponing.
Freedom from anxiety. Freedom from nagging pressures. Freedom from self-doubt. Accomplishing put-off tasks will give you a great boost of confidence and energy. Imagining winning on purpose and living the impossible. Is there any other way to “Level Up”, other than moving full speed ahead with your chosen creative career path? Stop procrastinating today… and let’s go!!!
